NEWTOWN, Conn. — Tragedy spread through the entire Newtown region Friday, but one neighborhood was hit especially hard.
In the village of Sandy Hook, James Mattioli lived on the same block as student Jesse Lewis and special education teacher Anne Marie Murphy. Those three were among the victims when Adam Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday and opened fire, killing six adults and 20 students.

James, 6, was the son of Mark and Cynthia Mattioli. On Twitter, Sally Martinelli, along with several others, related giving swimming lessons to James and another Sandy Hook victim, Daniel Barden.
“The proudest day as a lifeguard/teacher was when you finally did that cannonball,” Martinelli said Sunday.
Shannon McDonald related similar sentiments.
“Rest in peace James and Daniel,” she said. “Both great little swimmers. Both great kids.”
